Butterfly fringe is predicted as one of the top haircut trends for autumn and winter. Like the popular butterfly haircut, the style is all about layers. Styling a butterfly fringe is easy with the right tools.

What

Everywhere you look right now it's clear: bangs are in. After the strong resurgence of curtain bangs last year, we've seen countless fringe styles pop up. Birkin bangs, micro bangs, and now, on the heels of the popular butterfly cut, you can expect to see butterfly fringe everywhere this autumn and winter.

Cute Wearable Butterfly Hairstyles

As predicted in BlondMe's Fall Trend Report, the bangs haircut is a top contender for seasonal hair changes. Going into the fall, I'm doing a lot of haircuts on clients that are growing out of their shorter lengths, celebrity hairstylist Brendnetta Ashley says in the report. The butterfly fringe came about as a solution for people growing out their curtain bangs.

Much like the butterfly haircut, butterfly bangs are all about blending varying lengths of hair. The haircut itself features short layers around the crown of the head, giving the illusion of shorter hair, meanwhile the fringe uses layers around the face to achieve a feathery look.

A butterfly fringe is a layered fringe that is feathered, Ashley tells . It resembles butterfly wings, thus the name behind it. This cut creates a lot of movement in the hair.

The Butterfly Haircut Can Help You Fake Shorter Hair

Though this type of bangs is flattering on all hair types, if you really want to see the feathered layers in the cut, Ashley recommends styling it a particular way. To truly see the effect of the butterfly fringe, this look is great for hair that is styled and smoothed out — so straight to a soft wave, she says, much like curtain bangs.

When you style your butterfly fringe, start with a heat protectant spray, like the BlondMe Wonders Glaze Mist (£10.25) or the OUAI Heat Protection Spray (£25), and grab a medium round brush. As you blow dry, keep your brush diagonal in the direction that you want the fringe to lay, says Ashley. The round brush will give the volume you want in your fringe. Directing the fringe diagonally will leave you with the feathered look.

Entertainment Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro Bring Chaos in the Killers of the Flower Moon Trailer by Victoria Edel 2 weeks agoThe butterfly cut is a very layered, feathery haircut, the longest layers of which fall just below the shoulder. Shorter layers are cut around the crown of your head to create the illusion of having shorter strands. The purpose of this is so that the top layer can be separated from the bottom and easily pinned under to look like a short haircut. There can be variations depending on where you want the face frame to start.

It’s good for medium texture with a slight coarseness, and hair that lays flat but isn’t so naturally wavy. The longer the hair, the better, in order to pull this off best. Don’t use it on thin hair because when you layer, it will only look thinner.

Plan to add color to this cut? Keep hair to a single color or ask for soft dimensions with no more than two levels of difference to avoid high color contrast. This means keeping your added color similar to your natural shade for a blended, natural appearance. Cut your layers before coloring so you don’t cut out, or compromise, your new hue.

The length and dimensions are perfect for playing with new tools and techniques, but if you’re having a rushed morning, these layers make for an effortlessly cool ponytail, too. For hair-up looks, the long layers pull back while the shorter layers fall to frame the face. This makes it easy to achieve a voluminous, cascading ponytail with little-to-no styling needed.
