Curtain Bangs Diy

Curtain Bangs Diy

From ’70s blowouts to the return of “The Rachel 2.0, ” retro styles are all the rage—with curtain bangs taking the throne as one of the trendiest styles of the year. Whether it be beautiful bobs or long layers, our clients are requesting to pair their cuts with a Jane Birkin-inspired fringe.

It gets even better: Curtain bangs are also great for adding body to long, heavy hair—without sacrificing any length. We tapped into Ulta Beauty Design Team Member Justin Toves-Vincilione (@ahappyjustin) for the ultimate technique for shaping, refining and beautifully blending a longer curtain bang.

How

Justin recommends starting your cut on dry, styled hair because the movement and placement of the bangs will be different from when they’re wet. This allows you to shape wispy layers and build feathering in real time.

How To Cut Curtain Bangs On Curly And Straight Hair

Part the hair as desired, then take one piece and overdirect to the opposite side. Then, slide cut using the “Pinch & Talk” method. This technique will help form and accentuate the soft detailing of the bangs. Remember it’s always good to cut longer first—you can always go shorter!

Cut and shape the second section of hair, using your freshly cut bang as a guide. Justin uses a pair of ARC™ Scissors Master Series PARAGON II 7″ to get the perfect chop! The PARAGON II is perfect for dry-cutting, loaded with razor-sharp and durable steel blades that are optimized for precision line work and slide, slice and point cutting techniques. Thick, coarse hair—don’t sweat it!

Justin tops off the fresh cut with Airy Texture Spray by Authentic Beauty Concept to add volume and accentuate the shape, followed by Strong Hold Hairspray to lock in the finished look. A few drops of Nourishing Hair Oil is the cherry on top, taming any frizz and flyaways for an effortlessly blown out look.

How

Curtain bangs are long, wispy bangs that frame the face in a flattering way. If you’d like to cut your own curtain bangs at home, start by getting a sharp pair of hair cutting shears so you can make precise cuts. Detangle your dry hair with a comb and part it evenly down the middle. Place your comb at the crown of your head and create a sharp, diagonal part from your crown to the arch of your right eyebrow. Secure this right section of hair in place with a small clip, then create a second part from your crown to the arch of your left eyebrow. This creates a triangular section of hair that will form your curtain bangs. Comb the section of hair straight down so it falls directly in front of your face. Then, run the comb through your hair again until you get to your chin and stop. Place your first 2 fingers right underneath the comb and cut the section of hair straight across at chin level. Next, part your bangs down the middle and hold the right half of your bangs between 2 fingers just above the tips of your hair. Keep your fingers parallel to the angle of your right eyebrow angle and use the shears to cut just below your fingers. Do the same thing on the left side, but make this cut to the opposite angle so it’s parallel to the arch of your left eyebrow. To feather your bangs so they blend naturally with the rest of your hair, comb your bangs straight down a final time. Hold your shears vertically and make 4-6 small snips across the bottom of your fringe. Brush out your bangs, style your hair, and enjoy your new look!Shall we shag now or later? The ’70s shag haircut—think choppy, face-framing layers with texture for days—resurfaced a few years ago and we’ve been feelin’ the fringe frenzy ever since. Whether they create a subtle frame around the face or a dramatic curtain sweeping effect, all the best shags are paired with fringe. That’s why we’re breaking down texture master Joel Torres’ (@joeltorresstyle) best fringe-cutting tips and videos to achieve face-framing, asymmetrical and concave curtain bangs. Get it all below!

Let’s get technical. The shag is all about texture and personalization BUT also relies on strong lines and precision-cutting. That’s why Joel cuts the hair 70 percent wet (its elasticity makes it easier to control tension), then blows it out the way it’s going to be styles and texturizes on dry hair. Here’s why: “Wet hair is easier to cut, ” says Joel. “Dry hair reveals the reality, so you know where to texturize, detail and remove weight.”
