Jennifer Lopez has just got a very on-trend ‘butterfly’ haircut – and this layered lo is one that plenty of TikT users are trying to create themselves at home with a viral technique
We all learnt in lockdown that DIY haircuts were something we never really wanted to try again. At least we thought we all learnt. Now it’s like we’ve all forgotten the mistakes of 2020 because TikTers are getting their scissors out again to try the “butterfly” haircut.
And this trend is only set to gain in popularity now that Jennifer Lopez has given it a try (with professional help, of course. We highly doubt JLo hacked at her ends with a pair of kitchen scissors).
Trying Butterfly Haircut 💇♀️ At Home
The singer shows off her new cut in a promo video for her upcoming movie Shotgun Wedding, in which it’s clear her long lengths have been given extra body with the help of some clever butterfly layering. The result is plenty of volume at the roots and sleeker ends.
If that doesn’t give you enough of a description of what a butterfly cut actually is, celebrity hairstylist Jay Birmingham gives a proper explanation of this exact type of cut.
“It’s an updated take on the classic 'Rachel from Friends' style and the 90s layering lo that we all love again, ” he says. “You may have heard of the ‘octopus’ cut and essentially the butterfly is almost the same but with a few tweaks.

“This stylish hair cut requires short and long choppy layers. It features shorter layers around your jawline to frame your face and longer layers below your shoulders to create contrast and movement throughout.”
It sounds like quite a tricky style for even a professional to get right, doesn’t it? Definitely not one many of us would attempt to recreate at home ourselves. However, TikT thinks the layers are easy to achieve with one particular cutting technique initially outlined in a tutorial video from hairstylist Brad Mondo.
Brad instructs people to split your hair into two sections and pull the front one (from the ear forward) into a ponytail so that it resembles a unicorn hair horn. The back section then gets tied into a normal high ponytail.

He then says to cut off a “good amount” of hair – around four inches – from each ponytail. When the hair is let down and dried, it should have plenty of face-framing layers. Brad also snips off any straggly ends after letting the sections down.
A quick scan through TikT shows plenty of people attempting the butterfly haircut for themselves – and to varying degrees of success. Since Brad is famous for his reaction videos to home haircuts going wrong, some users je in the comment section that he’s started this “easy” tutorial so that he has content for future videos.
